For Chris Black’s

eyes only.

Or whomever.

The following are various projects I’ve worked on/am perpetually working on that you might find nifty.

Carhartt Archive visit

back in October I visited my kid brother in Michigan, and finagled my way into a private visit to Carhartt’s archive at their world HQ.

It was fucking sick! There were library-style stacks (maybe 10’ tall) but holding jackets, overalls, and what not.

I wrote about it and then sold the essay to Trufelman/her substack. I was definitely trying to channel Pulling Weeds. Here’s that piece: “The Meaning of Carhartt.”

a substack I write 2-3 x a month about things (“media texts” if you will) that people should be paying more attention to.

I do the logos, images, and writing. It’s supposed to be fun and light--certainly free--an outlet for me to go on about miscellaneous things I can’t stop thinking about. Of which there are many!

Here’s the most recent one: ISSUE 059

And there’s the corresponding Nalgene. Limited edition of course.

polaroids

They’re so flattering! So I like to shoot as many as I can. Though the camera is a lil clunky.

35mm

Every outing looks fun when it’s on film, so I’ve been shooting film since I was 14, know my way around a darkroom, and scan my own negatives. I try to always have my camera with me.

Denim.

Denim as a medium of communication was what I studied in graduate school.

Tons of cool people came out of the woodwork and talked to me about jeans, their work with jeans, and beyond.

NPR had me on as an “expert guest”. Ben Edgar connected me to his “denim broker” who also does all of Rick Owens’ denim. The UO school of Journalism wrote a lil piece about me after I presented at a nerdy conference. I went to the Levi’s vault. It was a lot of fun.

t-shirts

I’ve taken to archiving these collections of things as much as I can. It’s tedious and it’s not perfect but it feels slightly more meaningful than having no record of them.

scanning

Scanning objects on my flatbed scanner has become one of my favorite things to do. You can get an incredible amount of texture!

and so on and so forth

I also coach a 12u travel baseball team which is a blast.

but yeah those are the creative highlights I’d say.

I’ll leave you with this text Avery (Trufelman) sent me last year. She’s a hoot.
